Portrait of Vanishing Characters
頭の中の文字は、時をかけて変わりつづける
すり減った石のようになり、明滅する光となる
それは、果たして文字といえるのだろうか
これはわたしを経由した、文字の肖像である
読んだ書物を焼き、灰にしたものを混ぜた墨で書いた
もう、二度と現像することのできない、生と死の証明である
The letters in my head continue to change over time
They become like worn stones and flickering light.
Can they really be called letters?
This is a portrait of the letters that have passed through me
I wrote with ink mixed with the ashes of books I had read and burned
It is a proof of life and death that can never be developed again.

人は、記憶した文字のかたちを、忘れる。
しかし、その文字を通して伝わったことばは死の直前まで覚えていることもある。
わたしを経由した、文字の肖の姿は自分にしかわからない。
わたしは今、本がなくとも、書かれていた詩を思い出しことばにすることができる。
記憶し、伝達をすることを続ける限り、わたしの大切なものは消失しない。
People forget the shapes of the characters they once remembered.
Yet the words conveyed through those characters may remain in the memory until the very moment before death.
The image—the imprint—of those characters as they pass through me is something only I can perceive.
Even without the book now, I can recall the poem that was written and turn it back into words.
As long as I continue to remember and to transmit, the things precious to me will not disappear.
